Ruhunu University provides expertise for tsunami reconstruction

University of Ruhuna has formed a committee to facilitate on-going reconstruction of the tsunami affected areas in the Southern region, Chairman of the committee Prof. D. Attapattu told at a news briefing in the Ruhunu University, Matara.

The committee will fully assess the damage caused to houses and properties, towns, roads, drinking water facilities, small and medium industries, fisheries, agriculture and cultural heritage sites in the tsunami affected areas of the Southern region. It would provide expertise knowledge on the process of expediting the on-going reconstruction work in the Southern region.

This committee consists of experts in the fields of Housing and Construction, Town Planning, Fisheries, Agriculture, Business and Tourism, Health Care, Disaster Management, Religious and Cultural Affairs. A team of medical students attached to the Ruhunu Medical Faculty has also been mobilized to assist mentally traumatised children and adults in tsunami affected areas. The Ruhunu University has also mobilized a team of students to gather grievances of people where they needed immediate assistance to move into normal life.

The Committee members are: Prof. D. S. Liyanage, Prof. Sarath Amarasinghe, Dr. Sarath Hettiarachchi, Dr. Sujeeva Amarasena, Dr. Aruna Amarasinghe, Dr. Gamini Fonseka, Dr. P. R. T. Kumaratunge, Dayananda Ambalangodage and Nimal Hettiarachchi."
