Although one year has elapsed since the tsunami disaster hit the country -about 28 families at Boosa and Pitiwella near Galle, are still occupying dilapidated tents in a temple garden.They are struggling for existence against different odds in decayed tents covered with polythene and cadjans without any attention from the relevant authorities.
An occupant of a tent G.G.Nimal said" My wife was killed in the disaster. However I managed to save my child. My house, shop and other property were swept by the waves.
We have been confined to tents that are decayed and leaking during rains for the last one-year of the disaster. There isn't a single person to look into our misery. We have not received any help from the government excluding the relief allowance of Rs. 5000 and the dry ration. I could have started my boutique if I had money" "My sister and her daughter, my grand mother, and my aunty were killed and my house destroyed in the disaster.
