A REPORT last week from the international pressure group ‘Tourism Concern’ has severely criticised some of the post-tsunami reconstruction in parts of South and South East Asia.
More than nine months after the disaster, Tourism Concern has found that because of land disputes related to the redevelopment of tourism, thousands of people remain homeless.
With regard to its findings about the post-tsunami situation in Sri Lanka, it says: “Local people are not always being given a voice, with business leaders dominating the reconstruction plans. In Sri Lanka, the Task Force to Rebuild The Nation (TAFREN) is headed by an extra-government body of ten members, six of whom are involved in the country’s tourism industry.”
The report is the result of research undertaken by Tourism Concern between May and September of this year together with first-hand accounts and consultation with stakeholders in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and the Maldives.
