Mullaitivu Institute targets producing skilled workers

TamilNet: 19.02.05: "[TamilNet, February 19, 2005 17:41 GMT] The Economic Consultancy House (TECH), a Non-Governmental Non-Profit Sharing Organization registered with the Government of Sri Lanka, is building a new Technical Institute in Mullaitivu to train Masons, Carpenters, Electricians, Fitters, Machine operators and other skilled workers to fulfil the current need of workers for building of houses and infrastructure in theTsunami affected areas. Training will also include outboard motor repair and fibre glass boat repair, TECH officials said.

Director of TECH, Mr Suhunan, told TamilNet that TECH is involved in several other income generation projects. 'TECH's mission is to conceive of innovative ideas, experiment with them for practical applications in NorthEast and use the results to improve the earning potential of our people. We also encourage entreprenuerhip and are currently partnering with expatriate investors in commercial ventures,' Suhunan said. 'In the aftermath of Tsunami we also participated in relief efforts. TECH distributed RTs 1.5 million worth of relief supplies to tsunami displaced families who sought refuge in Kilinochchi and surrounding areas. Financial assistance was provided the TECH branch in France. Rs. 500,000 worth of medical supplies including anti-biotics were delivered by TECH to Mullaitivu Hospital. Japan TECH and Green Peace Movement provided the financing for this work,' Suhunan said.

"TECH branch in the US is funding TECH's work on Town and Country planning and Housing development for Tsunami affected coastal areas in Vadamaradchchi East and Mullaitivu. The same organization has helped TECH to rebuild damaged fishing boats for residents of Trincomalee coastal villages.

"UNDP is also providing us funding to carryout experimental micro-irrigation, tree planting and building bunds to prevent sea erosion. Australia TECH is assisting us with building a micro irrigation model farm in lands near the Iranaimadu junction adjacent to where our head office is located," Suhunan said.''
